Fred has been a long-term member of the Bali expat community for many years. We chatted with her to learn about the process of founding Les Basics, an ethical fashion label, and the highlights of her experience living and running a business in Bali.
Tell us a little about you and how you ended up in Bali.
I first visited Bali on a month-long trip with my best friend and boyfriend. Drawn in by its magic, I returned a few months later with no plan. That’s when I took on the challenge of starting my own brand, making this paradise my home ever since.
What was your biggest challenge when you first started your brand?
Starting from scratch was tough – there weren’t many resources for starting a brand overseas. Navigating legalities like visas and paperwork was also a hurdle, but things have improved since then.
What do you feel is the main advantage of producing in Bali?
The people and the culture are the most significant advantages.
Your go-to spots in Bali/Indonesia.
I love Nusa Lembongan, Sumbawa, and Uluwatu – each place holds a unique charm for me.
One experience that you had in Bali that you will never forget.
Getting in trouble with immigration because I didn’t know the visa rules was certainly memorable! But on a brighter note, meeting incredible people and exploring places like Flores and Mentawais are unforgettable experiences. (Like having no internet, living on a deserted island or exploring remote areas on a boat)
What advice would you give to someone who’s starting their business now?
Don’t do it! Haha, no, really, Have FUN. Start small, test, and see if YOU enjoy it first. Always make things that make you happy and Focus on making decisions that align with the planet and humanity – together, we can all make a difference.
